About us.

Superior Mind: ACES is a high-quality, licensed childcare, preschool, after school, and PK-12 multigenerational African-centered educational services provider located in the historic North Rosedale Park neighborhood on Detroit’s West side.

Our mission is to dismantle the miseducation of Black students and other students of color through the targeted cultivation of rigorous, culturally relevant, and responsive research projects with a focus on African people’s rich legacy of genius in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). We advance the liberating pursuit of environmental justice and sustainability, community advocacy and activism, and the attainment of a successful PK-college education, career and life trajectory. 🎓

Our nonprofit is proud to provide the entire family with well rounded, African-Centered Education Services (ACES).

One of a Kind.

Superior Mind: ACES is the only facility certified to deliver the Nkenge (en-ken-jay) method of education, a revolutionary educational philosophy developed and coined by Dr. Nefertari Nkenge, an African American researcher and educator who cultivated her deep knowledge of African-centered education as a long-term, Master Teacher of Malcolm X Academy (Detroit, MI).

Strengthened by a diverse range of transformational leadership capacities and as a testament to her body of research on cultivating a liberatory praxis to dismantle miseducation as it uniquely impacts students of African descent, Dr. Nkenge is an educator-practitioner with experience educating youth from Brooklyn, NY to Shanghai, China.

A proud native Detroiter, Dr. Nkenge’s work is driven by the ethos that we must Educate to Liberate. The belief that “knowledge is the basis of our liberation from systemic oppression” informs her grassroots community advocacy, as the proud Founder of Superior Mind: ACES.

Our Educational Philosophy.

The Nkenge "superior mind" method of educational philosophy is an African-centered, non-traditional, wholistic approach to learning, which delivers a culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining model of nurturing, social, emotional, and intellectual development in children of African descent and other people of color.

Superior Mind: ACES fosters PK-12 children’s sense of our interdependence as a people, and equally reinforces the importance of a Pan-African Nationalist identity, while prescribing righteous environmental justice and sustainability focused STEM projects and Black community development in a warm, safe learning space as an extension of a nurturing home environment.

Our Learning Approach.

Characterized by culturally rich, affirming curricula content and a series of 90-120 minute learning blocks (inclusive of optional, collaborative learning centers and activities), Superior Mind: ACES subscribes to mixed-aged classroom and a rigorous academic philosophy that cultivates the organic, genius seed ability of all children.

While we sing, talk, play, and nurture our infants into a state of optimal academic, health, and wellness (by anticipating their every need); for our toddlers and older babies, we rely upon each of our scholar children to self-select from the vast range of humanities and STEM disciplines, based upon their natural instincts and interests.

Ultimately, we nurture the intellectual, social, and emotional development of the 'whole child' and maximize the innate curiosities, limitless creativity of traditionally miseducated Black children (and other children of color), in a warm, loving, family-like African centered home environment.

Our Teachers.

Our teachers are licensed, caring professionals who are the significant formula to our loving, family environment and rousing success.

They do more than teach—they nurture every child, cultivating care specific to everyone’s unique needs. At Superior Mind: ACES, your child will be cared for by certified, attentive teachers who believe in them, who give them the confidence to try new things and to make new friends. Our teachers go through an intensive and scrupulous process of internship, extensive pre-hire training and interviewing, extensive background checks, followed by a complete onboarding process which includes rigorous, annual training in: cultural competencies, CPR, first-aid, water/sleep safety, nutrition, emergency preparedness, physical fitness, prevention of child abuse and neglect, special education strategies for students w/ disabilities, and prevention, control of infectious diseases.

Each class has a low student-teacher ratio, in order to empower our staff to provide the individual attention required by each child in our collaborative learning environment. Our team of staff inclusive of the following: a director, lead teacher, teenaged/young adult Scholar Ambassadors, a wholistic chef, and support team (on site maintenance, security and contractual social worker, nurse-by appointment), who are equally attentive to your child’s social, emotional, and academic needs and are rigorously trained and devoted to performing the best quality of care and service in the industry.
