What sets our brand apart is that Superior Mind: ACES offers a full-range of comprehensive educational services to complement an African centered, whole child approach to childcare, learning and to cultivating the natural genius of Black children.
With a curriculum designed to serve children from 8 weeks-teenaged years (with occasional educational programming to benefit the entire family and grassroots community), we keep our enrollment numbers low to accommodate the unique needs of every child within our care.
With an average teacher-student ratio of 1:4 for the daycare (and 1:6 for child care; 1:12 for after-school), our services are geared to knowing, honoring, and personalizing our rigorous, culturally relevant, responsive and sustaining STEM curriculum to the specialized learning interests and needs of every enrolled students.
As a complement to our rigorous academic and enrichment curriculum, we also offer age-appropriate potty training, SEL (social emotional learning) activities, special education services (for Autism, ADHD, and differently abled, exceptional neurodiverse learners) and referrals to outpatient therapy, as needed. In addition to offering child care and preschool to 7-12 infants and toddlers, our after-school curriculum features grade-level tutoring, cultural enrichment classes and outdoor STEM service projects and play w/ snacks for up to 12 school-aged children.
Our licensed, highly-qualified, and certified personnel bring a rich diversity of experience and specialized areas of expertise to our educational offerings and as a component of our services, we are proud to include services, as follows:
Superior Mind academic curriculum: Morning meditation, Yoga & Pilates; letters, numbers; early language development (balanced literacy), early STEM science, technology, engineering & math development, weekly themed activities, and more . . .
Enrichment curriculum: Academic tutoring in core subject areas, arts and crafts, artistic expression w/ African drumming, singing/dance movement, culinary arts, farming, drama, group story time, games, and occasional field trips to supplement the curriculum focus.
Hours of Operation: 7:00 am - 6:00 pm M-F; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on selected Saturdays
Ages served: Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and after-school for school-aged children (K-8) early start/late care
Number of children: Group daycare enrollment maximum (7-12) & after-school care enrollment max (12)
Meals & Snacks: We offer two (2) full meals (breakfast & lunch), as prepared by a certified and licensed wholistic chef, and 2-3 snacks per day (morning, afternoon, and late afternoon snacks), depending upon the length of your child’s care schedule.
The Nkenge method of instruction prescribes categorizing our small group learning circles in accordance with the average age (and diagnostically assessed intellectual/social readiness), of each of our enrolled children.
Infants (8 weeks-14 months) will receive personalized care in our Mamatoto classes. These classes literally translate to mean that both the Mother and Child are one unit, and care is akin to mothering in the long-held tradition of Black motherhood.
Toddlers (15 mos-3 years), are in a pivotal stage of research and learning, thus their class is affectionately regarded as the Uhuru Sasa or the “freedom now” group. This learning schedule and curriculum is fluid and admittedly responsive to the diverse, rigorous intellectual and social needs of each child.
All children ages 3-6 years are enrolled in either the pre-kindergarten or kindergarten class or Watoto children’s group, based upon their intellectual and social readiness and maturity - not necessarily their age.
Finally, our early/late care for school-aged students is centered on engaging them in an African-centered Rites of Passage program which introduces them to womanhood and manhood via engagement in soft skills, etiquette, and rigorous STEM project-based learning initiatives as led by certified teachers and youth/young adult Scholar Ambassadors; tutoring children in respective core subject areas (as needed); providing homework help; serving healthy snacks; and empowering free play in a warm, safe, and supervised home environment.
With a Grand Opening in the Summer of 2024, parents are encouraged to enroll their infants, toddlers, and preschool children for our coveted daycare slots today.
Advanced enrollment for after school (early/late care), is available for all school-aged children on a first-come, first-served basis. Click “Enroll Now” to download our enrollment packet to include pricing info & required forms.
Behind every great brand is a team of visionary doers. Dr. Nefertari Nkenge is a 30-year veteran educator of African-centered education, and a small business owner who has thoroughly researched and immersed herself in liberating educational models. In addition to a published research study on dismantling miseducation, Dr. Nkenge has authored the “Superior Mind” African-centered educational method of instruction to complement the unique needs and genius seed of Black students, specifically. Dr. Nkenge and her dynamic team at Superior Mind: ACES are committed to dismantling the pervasive miseducation of Black students through providing an affirming model of African-centered education services.
Jendayi (or Ms. Jen as she is affectionately referred to by her students), is a recent graduate of Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. With several years of both early childhood education and secondary Earth and Space Science teaching experience already under her belt and given her own rich experience of having gleaned from the countless benefits of being immersed in an African-centered educational environment herself - she brings her impressive combination of STEM and culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy expertise to our leadership team and families.
We are blessed to employ the talents of an onsite, wholistic Chef, well versed in proper nutrition, and Kosher meals (breakfast, lunch, and 2-3 snacks). Our food is supplied from local, organic farms and small businesses to support our Detroit community. All items are rigorously tested for freshness and non-GMO, quality condition. We offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free nutritional offerings and ensure that any dairy and meat products meet Halal/Kosher requirements. Our daycare also takes part in the CAFCP State Food Program, so our weekly menus (posted for parent’s perusal) adhere to rigorous government standards.
